The Potala Palace, once the home of the Dalai Lama now is a tourist hotspot costing 100yuan a person. But don't bother taking your camera. No pictures allowed! And out of the 5000 some rooms, you can only walk through about 15 of them, most of which are bare or have the walls covered. Makes you wonder where everything went huh?

Welcome back to IPFW - I hope you all had a great summer. Our current president Sara went to Tibet this summer and will be sharing photos and experiences with us throughout the year. We will be having bi-weekly meetings on Tuesday nights this semester - we will let you know the room number when we get it! Some big things this year:

Tibet Railroad - opened this summer, it takes travelers from Beijing to Lhasa and expected to expand all the way to Nepal. Not only is this railway an environmental disaster - one man has already died on it!

Beijing 2008 - The spotlight is on China. We must show the world the human rights viloations throughout China and especially in Tibet. Boycott Olympic merchandise and don't watch the games!

MOVIE NIGHT!!

Welcome back to school everyone! On Tuesday Feb 7th we will be showing the film "Daughters of Everest" in Kettler G46 at 4pm. Chips and Soda will be provided so tell a friend!
About the film:
Daughters of Everest" brings a unique flavor to a familiar story: the attempt to climb Mount Everest. In 2000, the first-ever expedition of Sherpa women to climb Everest was organized. This captivating documentary gives a close-up account of the expedition. Although the Sherpa people are legendary for their unmatched skill in mountaineering, Sherpa women are discouraged from climbing Everest, relegated instead into support roles in the climbing industry of Nepal. Told from a woman's perspective rarely seen on Everest or off, this film is both a dramatic, inspiring Everest story and an absorbing portrait of the Sherpa community.

It's Been Some Time

I realize that it has been some time since our last post, and for that, I am sorry. However, holiday seasons are busy and everyone knows that the end of the semster is a trying time! Out last meeting was cancelled due to the schedules of myself and Sara, but we are continuing meetings after Winter Break.

Our first meeting of the new year will most likely be a follow up of the previous one...the writing of the letters to the area newspapers. Hopefully, we will be able to show some films this next semester as well.

Meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 15

We will be having a meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 15th at 7pm in KT 247. We plan on updating our blog to show pictures from the amazing concert we had! Also, and most importantly, we will be drafting a letter/editorial about Bombadier. This letter will be sent to the IPFW newspaper as well as the two local ones. Please come and help out! Your input is always welcomed and needed! See you there!

Bombardier out of Tibet day of action was Thursday Nov 3rd and we DID SOMETHING! We painted a sign and hung it downtown. Free Tibet!

Meeting November 1

Our next meeting will be next Tuesday night at 7pm in KT 247. We will be discussing the concert and such. A discussion on the campus movement that will be taken on November 3rd for Bombardier Day of Action will take place as well. Don't forget that Monday, October 31st, we will be chalking the sidewalk outside of Neff and Kettler to promote the concert!

Windhorse

Well, we just finished Windhorse and it was truly moving! Sara and I give it 2 thumbs up! I, personally, suggest to all to watch this movie. I cannot think of words to describe the utter animosity you will feel towards the Chinese Government and their involvement with Tibet. This is a must see.

Our next concert will rock you on November 5th of this year in Neff Recital Hall at 7pm. There are three bands scheduled to play; Rehab After Party, Moser Woods, and Color By Numbers. Don't forget that all of the SFT merchandise you could ask for will be available for you to buy at very affordable prices! (We as students, understand the low incomes you all have!) T-shirts, bumper stickers, buttons, and CDs of the bands will be there. Hopefully you are too!

Besides our normally scheduled meetings (which we will begin to post here on the blog), we will also be posting reminders of upcoming events. The biggest one on the calendar is the Tibetan Freedom Concert 2005! It will be on November 5th @ 7pm, in Neff Recital Hall. The Low Down on SFT IPFW

SFT IPFW is corrordinated in Fort Wayne, IN on the campus of Indiana University Purdue University of Fort Wayne. Our chapter has been in existance since 2000 and strives to educate the community around us of the plight of the Tibetan people.

The current president and head of opperations is Sara Conrad and the Vise-president is Michelle Staller. Together, sadly, they make up this tiny chapter. However, we are sure that membership will grow this semester (epecially due to the Mid-West Conference held in Chicago ealier this month). As our membership blossoms, we will be sure to add these people to our blog!
